About Me

Sophie Kent

LMHC, Anxiety Specialist, Nice Human

Hi, nice to meet you! I’m Sophie, and most of my days are spent talking with people who have anxiety. Yes, I felt very seen by the Inside Out 2 movie.

I specialize in working with individuals who struggle with anything in the anxiety disorder category from generalized anxiety to OCD, agoraphobia, panic disorder, and a few others. I use evidence-based strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Response Prevention, and Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (a mouthful!) in my work.

Using evidence-based techniques to help others has been so rewarding for me. It’s the best thing ever when someone finds their “why,” and stops letting anxiety steal their days away. Empowering people to get back to a life they love and re-engage with what’s most important to them is what I’m all about.

How I Ended Up Here

  • I’ve always been interested in how we feel emotions and perceive the world around us. Why does one person see a dog and get scared, and another person doesn’t? These types of questions ran through my mind all the time. I loved to help people, and wondered if psychology was the way to combine my natural interest in the brain and do some good in the world. Spoiler alert, it was!

  • Throughout college, I explored internships in private practice, nonprofit primary prevention curriculum development, and finally in a partial hospitalization program for those with significant mental health issues. This was my first time working with adults and teens with OCD/Anxiety. It was energizing, and seeing people make measurable progress was beyond rewarding. Throughout graduate school, I focused on anxiety disorders and landed my next year-long internship at a specialized anxiety disorder clinic.

  • Working in the field for the last 3 years I started to notice gaps in what information people needed and what they had access to. I first noticed this in others who wanted to become therapists. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about my job, and not a lot of voices helping interested students get answers. So, I launched You Could Be A Therapist in 2023 – to help the potential therapist.

Then I noticed that the skills I often teach to my clients to help their anxiety felt groundbreaking to them. Even those who had seen multiple therapists before me. Launching products and downloads and helpful packets of information is my attempt to bridge this gap in knowledge.

FAQs

What experience do you have to create these products?

I love teaching and sharing information. In the past, I’ve worked with several nonprofits helping develop primary prevention curricula for both domestic violence and human trafficking in the state of Florida. The curriculum I developed is still used as the mandatory requirement for all public school teachers in Hillsborough County to take every year.

I’ve also worked as a teaching assistant while earning my bachelor’s degree and graduate student assistant while getting my masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. So, summarizing and communicating important information into easily applicable resources is right up my alley.

Will using your resources cure my anxiety?

Cure” is such a tough word. It’s one I avoid when speaking with anyone about what might help anxiety. Mental health is not stationary, it is ever-changing and needs attending to flourish. The resources you’ll find here are an amalgamation of what I use in real time with my therapy clients. My hope is that it will help you learn to manage your anxiety in the same way many of my clients have.

Can you be my therapist?

Maybe! I’m currently licensed to work with individuals within the state of Florida via telehealth, and in the Tampa Bay Area in person. If you’d like to learn more about my availability, rates, and more, click here.

What does LMHC mean?

LMHC stands for “Licensed Mental Health Counselor.” This is my current status as a clinician in the state of Florida.
